Palli saddhi, a delicious flavored rice with peanut spice mix and rice. It is quite a traditional recipe of Telangana made especially as an offering for Goddess GOWRI on Saddhula Bathukamma. The finely roasted peanuts lend a nice nutty taste to the rice and the spices used in making the peanut spice mix adds a beautiful flavor along with complimenting the peanuts. Very minimal spices goes into making this delicious recipe.
Bathukamma, is a beautiful floral festival of Telangana. A nine day festival celebrated by married women, starting from Petra amavasya and concludes on ninth day ie., on Ashwayuja Durgashtami and we call the last day of Bathukamma celebrations as SADDHULA BATHUKAMMA. On this last day five or nine types of Saddhulu are offered to GOWRAMMA THALLI(Goddess Gowri Devi) and send her off with great pomp and pray to Goddess to arrive soon next year.
This PALLI SADDHI is a traditional recipe made for Saddhula bathukamma. A freshly ground spice mix with peanuts roasted along few spices and then later mixed with rice and topped with a tempering of peanuts, chana dal, garlic cloves, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves and red chillies are used.

PALLI SADDHI
Ingredients
- 4 cups cooked rice
For spice mix
- ½ cup Peanuts
- 1 tbsp Coriander seeds
- 10 Fenugreek seeds
- 8 Whole dry red chillies
For tempering
- 3 tbsp Cooking oil
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- ½ tsp Turmeric powder
- 2 tbsp Chana dal/Bengal gram dal
- 3 tbsp Peanuts
- 1 sprig Curry leaves
- 4 Green chilies
Instructions
Making peanut spice mix
- Heat a skillet, add peanuts and dry roast on medium flame until they are evenly golden brown.
- Transfer the roasted peanuts to a plate to bring them to room temperature. Later remove the husk of peanuts.
- Now add fenugreek seeds, coriander seeds and roast on low flame until they are nice golden brown. This may take around 2 minutes on medium flame.
- Keep the roasted seeds aside. Add a tbsp of oil to the pan, add torn red chilies and roast for a minute or two.
- Transfer all the roasted spices and peanuts to a blending jar and pulse them to a semi-coarse powder. Keep the peanuts a bit chunky similar to breadcrumbs.
Making the Palli saddhi
- In a mixing bowl add cooked rice, peanut spice mix, salt and give it a good mix.
- Make a tempering of mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, chana dal, peanuts, green chilies, turmeric powder.
- Add the tempering to the rice and give it a good mix.
- Serve the Palli saddhi/Peanut flavored rice with some yogurt and fryums.
